Lanikai Pillbox Hike

IB Lanikai Pillbox copyI’m not the kind of girl that hikes. I don’t look like a hiker nor act like one. But FoodographyHI is one of those people that make anything treacherous or physically painful seem exciting and adventurous. She convinced me to do the Lanikai Pillbox Hike with her yesterday and we died many times before making it to the top. We had a little spat about making it up that last part because I didn’t want to fall off the cliff and get killed. But again, she convinced me with the “we made it all the way up here, what’s another five minutes?” speech. As terrified as I was, I managed to climb my way to the top with her and we sat atop the pillbox and enjoyed the view of Kailua, Lanikai and Waimanalo. It was worth it.

The hardest part of the hike was actually going down. I think I fell a good six times due to the worn out traction on my sneakers. I got some cuts and scrapes to prove it!

Inside of the pillbox, there were some tags and this awesome artwork. I didn’t get a good photo of the outside (which had a snowman and some Christmas designs), but the inside was pretty cool.

Thanks to FoodographyHI for pushing me to the top. It’s awesome to feel that fear inside you once in a while, it makes you feel alive! That’s my take on the last adrenaline rush for 2012. Peace.

Just a “Pinch of Salt” and savor the broth

IB NMDEC1

Last night’s Honolulu Night Market at Kaka’ako event was pretty chill this time around. They must switch up the vendors each month to keep things fresh. Although there were less interesting food and pop-ups, the entertainment was awesome! There was some sort of drag show and The Deadbeats did their thang.

Inside the Pinch of Salt pop-up marketplace, there was an eye-catching mural of Marilyn. “All great things are preceded with chaos.” Yes, I completely agree!

Then you had your usual glances of hipster heaven, like this typewriter, for example. It was part of Hound & Quail‘s display of vintage, mid-century items. They had some typewriters, polaroid cameras and pretty jars for sale. In the photo on the right, there was a little green shop Paiko, which had some plants, paintings and eco-friendly gift-wrapping paper for sale.

Just outside the entrance of the night market, it looked like live artists were battling it out on the streets. The alcoholics and foodies took to the cocktail specials and the whole place was decked with ornaments and little Santas.

Afterwards, my best friends and I decided the bacon wrapped hot dogs at the night market didn’t sound too appetizing so we scoured the town for a late night hot pot haven. My good friend Sue had told me about Sweet Home Cafe a while ago and I’ve been wanting to go ever since. Hot soup and veggies sounded perfect for a chilly night. So we ordered two tasty broths, cooked some enoki mushrooms, choy sum, tofu and meat. The service was entertaining and excellent.

The grand finale was a complimentary dessert (another reason why I’ve fallen completely in love with this place). I have no idea what it’s called but it was some sort of shaved ice with coffee jello, watermelon jello, green stuff, white jello and tapioca.

It was a good night boys and girls.

Nattolee Jewelry >>> Honolulu, HI

0108e62c3bf111e2b7ea22000a1faf3c_7I finally got these babies in the mail! My high school classmate, Natalie Woo, is a well known jewelry designer here in Honolulu. Her pieces are so unique and trendy, a bunch of local boutiques sell her work and you’ll most likely see one of her pieces on other local fashion blogs. She posts her latest items on Instagram on a weekly basis, so when I saw these, I had to have them! She might have more black arrowhead and Buddha necklaces available at Fighting Eel Downtown.

La luna llena >>> The full moon

photo

I’m not satisfied with my photos from that night. They’re pretty blurry. But oh well, todos aprendemos de nuestros errores.

Thanksgiving, Wicked + Christmas Trees

I’m definitely feeling the holiday spirit this year! Thanksgiving was really nice. I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with my family and friends. These past few months have been crazy and I’ve missed hanging out with my family at the dinner table. The photo above is what I wore. Yep, big button down shirt and my fat pants. Haha! Although I didn’t really eat much at dinner. Turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing are really not my thing. So I was all about the dessert. (Also, I shaved the side of my head again. Hehe!)

The next day, my boss gave my co-worker Lauren & I tickets to the Wicked show at Blaisdell. So I had to download the book to get the full story on the witches of Oz. There’s nothing like a fun book & a green tea latte.

Here’s a photo from today! We got a cute little Christmas tree at work. 🙂

Fashion Blogger: GABIFRESH

(All images: GABIFRESH)

I’m so inspired by fashion blogger GabiFresh! My good friend Jenna Hall introduced me to her blog because she’s curvy, classy and so darn cute! This is a great blog to draw some inspiration for our plus-size island girls. GabiFresh showcases her outfits of the day, her travels and the latest designs for plus-size fashions.

I love how she promotes women who are naturally big and beautiful. Another thing I like about her is that she leads such a glamourous life but she’s also real and practical. Take her Default post, for example. Everything she’s wearing is affordable and most of them are from Forever21!

Calamari Studio

I stumbled upon Michelle Tavares’ Etsy shop Calamari Studio today. I’m in completely in love with her dreamlike circular prints. Tavares is a freelance illustrator based in Augusta, GA and features DIY projects and her inspirations on her blog. I love her idea of transforming heavily filtered photos into motivational (and inspirational) prints; they’re pretty creative yet simple with textured backgrounds. I’m thinking of creating something similar, but maybe with island-centric photos. We’ll see if I can find some time between work and sleep.

Wanderlustings

Summer has been very eventful so far. My little brother arrived in Honolulu the other day and I’ve taken him under my wing for the next three weeks. I’ve been thinking of ways to entertain this 11-year-old wonder-kid, having that he pretty much does whatever he wants in Guam. Since I’m a teacher, I’ve taken it upon myself to have him read at least one book a week, then have him tell me about the characters, plot and literary elements, all in between his golf tournaments, of course.

My brain needs some exercise as well. I’m trying to develop my creative skills and I’ve looked to some artists for inspiration. I’ve just stumbled upon artist and designer Caitlin Peters, creator of Wanderlustings. She designs jewelry on Etsy and has been featured in art shows. Her blog is a wonderful platform to post her designs, fashion tips and photography, I could scroll on forever just admiring her work.

I’m also thinking of taking an art class (either at the university or the Honolulu Academy of Arts) this summer, at least until the Fall semester starts. I’m a natural busy bee. 🙂
